The adventurers arrived in the small village of Malham around 3 o'clock. (13:00) As they came over the hilltop to where they could see Malham in the distance, they could also see a pretty active little shire ... lots of families out enjoying the warm weather, the sunshine, and pre-Easter weekend relaxation. Malham is a small town, with a little snack hut, 4 bars/cafe's, a handful of bed and breakfast's/inns and a Youth Hostel. There is an outfitter shoppe that has some gifts as well as a Park service information office. That's it. Groceries, banking, Post Office, schools, etc. one would have to travel to Settle. There was one Inn that had a free internet terminal. There was a mail drop. That's about it outside of a couple of payphones for communication with the outside world. Lots of charming little cottages and homes. Malham is quiet, peaceful, relaxing, and activities end very early in the evening. Our adventurers arrived at the hostel to find it would not open it's reception desk until 5 pm. So bound by heavy backpacks, the crew found a local cafe/pub that did not stink to high heavens of greasy food like the Muddy Boots Welcome cafe did - where they first tried to stop. The village of Malham, estimated population of about 200, was pretty bustling with families walking around. Made the village seem bigger than it really was. Many beautiful views all around. Would be a nice romantic get-a-way for lovers. |
The adventure party hung out along the river while waiting for the hostel to open. Around 5, they headed up and got bunks for the night. The original deposit that was done electronically was lost, so Lady Vanessa set out to get that taken care of. A browse-through the outfitters found Sir Thomas Leaf a small charming little purple faerie momento, and a couple of postcards. Thing is, since he had no laptop with him, his contact addresses were missing. Postal rates change tomorrow. He urgently attempted to send some cards to those he could find addresses of. Not much of a corresponding writer that Sir Thomas Leaf is, except through the web. Visit was then to the local pub next to the hostel where they could get some tea, drinks, and check internet. Sir Thomas Leaf was pretty sneezy because the pub had a cat, which of course, as is all cats it seems, was attracted to the asthmatic. Perhaps its because an asthmatic wheeze sounds like a kitten's purring. Who knows. After imbibing some web and drinks, the adventurers went to the hostel for dinner. The appetizer soup was good - homemade. The halibut fish n' chips with peas and corn that Sir Leaf ordered and the pizza that Lady Vanessa and Sir Ingo ordered tasted microwaved, but the dessert made up for it as were custard and pudding cakes. It must have been Ingo's fault. It was filling nonetheless. Lady Vanessa informed Sir Leaf that whenever in doubt, it's always Ingo's fault. That became the motto of the night. Good Sir Ingo took the teasing very well. Though at times, Sir Thomas Leaf was fearful the jesting might annoy, it did not. |
After dinner the explorers wandered around the small village of Malham to take in the sights then retired for the evening at the hostel. A short stop into the lounge to watch some British tv in the common room was short-lived as the crew became tired and retired for the evening.
| Scrumpy Jack Cider A very crisp and sweet hard cider I tried at the youth hostel in Malham. Very good. The bottle's label was different than that in which I've seen in the states ... it has a U.K. advisory label that suggests that responsible UK drinkers drink no more than 4 units a day for men, and 3 for women. Hmmm .... a night out I usually have over 4 units (see label for specifics) - does that disqualify for being a responsible drinker? I usually only drink when at a pub with friends (rare, usually only trips) and dancing .... :: ponders :: |
